HC Deb 26 October 1939 vol 352 c1570
47. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is still required to answer questions on behalf of the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence; and, as he is now responsible for the Department of Food, whose work is expanding and requires the full-time attention of the Minister in charge, and in view of the overriding importance of Defence at the present time, whether he will consider appointing a member of the War Cabinet to answer in future all questions relating to Coordination of Defence?

The Prime Minister

In view of the increasing importance of the work of the Ministry of Food, arrangements have been made to enable the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to devote his whole time to the work of that Department. Questions of major importance in regard to Co-ordination of Defence should, in future, be addressed to me. On questions of lesser importance, hon. Members' questions should be addressed to the Departments primarily concerned.
