HC Deb 26 October 1939 vol 352 cc1572-3
77. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Home Secretary how many Austrians who have appeared before tribunals, in the first fortnight of their operation, were interned; how many were exempted from internment but not exempted from enemy aliens restrictions; and how many were exempted both from internment and from the restrictions?

Sir J. Anderson

During the first fortnight the tribunals dealt with the cases of 410 Austrians; of these five were interned, 328 were exempted both from internment and from the special restrictions applicable to enemy aliens, and the remaining 77 were exempted from internment but not from the special restrictions.

Mr. Gallacher

Why are there two categories of what are called "enemy aliens"? Is the Minister not aware that those who are exempt from concentration are desirous of having their status altered?

Sir J. Anderson

I have explained the policy of the Government very fully.
