HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 c314
21. Captain Strickland

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of any possible shortage of petrol available for road-transport, he will consider means for the encouragement of the use of alternative fuel by not including any necessary increased weight caused by its adoption in the pay-load weight permitted on the vehicle?

Captain Wallace

A shortage of petrol is itself an incentive to the use of alternative fuels, and as at present advised I do not think that an increase of the permissible laden weight of vehicles would be justified on the grounds suggested.
