HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 c1815
71. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Secretary for Mines the number of wage earners on the colliery books in South and West Yorkshire, respectively, at the latest date available, and the comparative figures for March?

Mr. Lloyd

On 23rd September, 1939, the numbers of wage earners on colliery books in South Yorkshire were 95,200, and in West Yorkshire 42,400. On the corresponding date in March, 1939, the numbers were 98,900 and 44,100, respectively.

Mr. Smith

Is the hon. Gentleman satisfied that all is being done that can be done to get the collieries fully staffed so that unemployed miners can get to work again?

Mr. Lloyd

Every effort is being made in that direction.
