HC Deb 02 October 1939 vol 351 cc1660-1
15. Mr. Burke

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will reconsider the inland postage rates for parcels sent to men in the armed forces, as these greatly increased rates cause much hardship to poor persons?

Major Tryon

I regret that I am unable to apply the inland rates of postage to parcels sent to men serving in the armed forces overseas, but I am reviewing the present rates in consultation with the Service Departments.

Mr. Burke

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman bear in mind that when the price goes up from 11d. per 8 lbs. to is. 3d. it is a great hardship on women with 17s. per week?

Major Tryon

I am aware of that. Some time ago the matter came to my knowledge, and we are reviewing it with the Service Departments. I think if the hon. Member will wait he will find that the rates are more favourable when he sees our proposals.
