HC Deb 08 November 1939 vol 353 c216
58. Mr. John Morgan

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether any facilities exist in this country for the manufacture of glucose; and whether he has taken steps to ensure adequate supplies for medical and confectionery purposes?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

There are eight manufacturers of glucose in England who have in the past supplied the greater part of the requirements of the United Kingdom under normal conditions. Close contact is being kept with these manufacturers with a view to seeing that the needs of confectioners and others are met as far as possible. There have been some difficulties in connection with the supply of raw materials but the position is improving and it is anticipated that at least 75 per cent. of the demand will be met in the near future. Meanwhile imports are not being restricted. Glucose for medical purposes is manufactured by two firms which have been taken into consultation with a view to ensuring that supplies are adequate.
