HC Deb 01 November 1939 vol 352 c1916
31. Mr. J. Morgan

asked the Minister of Transport how he accounts for the present shortage of work at the railway carriage works at Doncaster; and why repair work usually carried out at these works is being diverted to privately-owned workshops in other parts of the country?

Captain Wallace

I am informed that there is no shortage of work at the railway carriage shops at Doncaster, and that no repair work usually carried out at these shops is being diverted to privately-owned workshops in other parts of the country.

Mr. Morgan

If I submit to the right hon. and gallant Gentleman a resolution from the N.U.R. branch concerned in this matter, will he go a little more into it than his answer indicates?

Captain Wallace

I realise that the hon. Member opposite is not one who puts down a question without some foundation, and I have, therefore, made very particular inquiries into this matter, and I am assured by the railway companies that there is no shortage of work.

Mr. Liddall

Is it not a fact that such work as this can be carried out at a lower cost than at privately-owned works?
