HC Deb 01 November 1939 vol 352 c1903
Mr. Lunn

It is my privilege to present to this Honourable House a petition on behalf of old age pensioners, which reads as follows: To the Honourable Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled: The humble petition of residents of Rothwell parliamentary division prays that the House may grant facilities for an increase in old age pensions on the lines suggested in the Labour party's programme, namely, £1 per week for a single person and 35s. for a married couple, conditional on retirement from employment, whereby the poverty which is being sustained by the present inadequate pensions may be overcome. And the petitioners will ever pray, as in duty bound, that the relief by the increase in the amount of the present old age pension to the amount petitioned for will be granted. May I say that it would be glad tidings to hundreds of thousands of old age pensioners in their poverty and myself in particular as this is my birthday if their prayer could be granted?
