HC Deb 26 May 1939 vol 347 cc2689-90
27. Mr. Benn

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the Lithuanian trade treaty of 1934 is still in force; and whether it is applied to trade with the Memelland?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Oliver Stanley)

The Trade Agreement with Lithuania of 1934 is still in force, but has now ceased to apply to the Memel Territory.

Mr. Benn

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what effect it had on the coal trade, because the agreement dealt with the importation of British coal into Memelland?

Mr. Stanley

I should require notice of that question if the right hon. Gentleman has any particular point to put. The situation is very difficult.

Mr. Benn

Can the right hon. Gentleman say that the annexation of Memelland by Germany has shattered the value of the trade agreement with this country.

Mr. Stanley

Oh no, Sir.
