HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 c28
53. Mr. Pilkington

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has inquired into the complaints that the steamship "Assimi," containing would-be illegal immigrants into Palestine, was sent to sea from Haifa on 23rd April, despite appalling sanitary conditions and with only two days' food on board; and with what results?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

Yes, Sir. I am glad to have the opportunity of correcting this entirely inaccurate report. The High Commissioner has informed me that the "Assimi" was thoroughly disinfected before leaving the harbour, that the sanitary arrangements on board were considered adequate by the public health authorities, and that food was supplied by the Palestine Government and the Jewish community sufficient for at least seven days, together with 150–200 tons of fresh water.
