HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 cc1695-6
60. Colonel Wedgwood

asked the Home Secretary whether he will permit the issue of visas to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Kraus, whose services have been applied for as a domestic couple by Mr. B. F. Robb, of North End Road, N.W.3, in spite of the post being in London and in spite of their ages, 57 and 52 years, in view of the fact that the applicant wants elderly people and two substantial guarantees of maintenance are available?

Mr. Peake

No recommendation has been received from the voluntary organisation in respect of this case, but my right hon. Friend is making further inquiries.

61. Colonel Wedgwood

asked the Home Secretary whether he will inquire into the case of Felix and Edith Adler, applied for as domestics by the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme on 8th January and forwarded to the Home Office for approval by the domestic bureau on 29th March; and, in view of his personal knowledge of these two persons, will he now authorise the visa?

Mr. Peake

No recommendation has been made to the Home Office by the voluntary organisation in respect of these people, who are not in Germany but in Norway, and on the information before my right hon. Friend, it does not appear that there are grounds for giving priority to these people over others whose claims for help are urgent.

Colonel Wedgwood

Can the hon. Member say what kind of question of priority comes in? In a case of these two persons I have received a great deal of money from abroad for them in case they should get ill. Why should my application be postponed and other applications be considered?

Mr. Peake

The answer is that the voluntary organisations have to deal with these cases as they receive them. This case deals with refugees who are in Norway and not in Germany, and the voluntary organisation quite rightly regard the case of German refugees as being the more urgent.

Colonel Wedgwood

What has an application I make for domestic servants in Norway to do with the German Jewish Refugees Committee?

Mr. Maxton

Is it something against the right hon. and gallant Member?
