HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 c1681
35. Mr. Day

asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity of pig-iron imported into this country from Russia and India, respectively, for the six months ended to the last convenient date?

Mr. Stanley

During the six months ended March, 1939, imports into the United Kingdom of pig-iron consigned from British India amounted to 23,467 tons. No imports from the Soviet Union were recorded during this period.

Mr. Day

Does that prove that the British private companies cannot produce it in sufficient quantity?
