HC Deb 01 May 1939 vol 346 c1488
10. Mr. Day

asked the Prime Minister the number of persons employed at the Foreign Office and Passport Office as at the last convenient date and the comparable figures for the same period of 1914?

Mr. Butler

The staff of the Foreign Office and Passport Office, including the staff of messengers, cleaners, etc., amounts to 1,028, as compared with 189 in 1914.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister say how many of these persons are employed in London?

Mr. Butler

No, not without notice.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister give any explanation of why there is such a large increase?

Mr. Butler

The work has become more difficult and more complicated, and I dare say there are more Parliamentary questions.
