HC Deb 01 May 1939 vol 346 cc1492-3
26. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps the Government are taking to extirpate the potato destroying Colorado beetle?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I am not aware that any colony of the Colorado beetle is established in this country, and the question of extirpation does not therefore arise.

Mr. De la Bère

Is my right hon. and gallant Friend aware of the very grave infestation in Holland, and will he take steps to prevent the importation into this country of these Dutch potatoes, which are infected with this unfortunate insect?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

All necessary precautions are taken by my Department, but I am sure my hon. Friend will realise that the Colorado beetle is not the only pest with which my Department is concerned.
