asked the Minister of Agriculture how many individual fanners received wheat deficiency payments in 1937–38; what is the total amount of wheat fund estimated to be required for the cereal year ending 1939; and how much of this sum had been advanced to growers up to the last date of payment for the current crop?

Mr. Ramsbotham

The number of registered growers who received deficiency payments under the Wheat Act, 1932, in respect of wheat sold during the cereal years 1937–38 was 76,649. The total expenditure of the Wheat Commission (including administrative expenses) for the current cereal year ending 31st July next, is estimated at approximately £9,400,000. The amount advanced to growers to date on account of deficiency payments on the current crop is approximately £4,920,600.
