HC Deb 23 March 1939 vol 345 c1425
4. Mr. Mainwaring

asked the Minister of Labour upon what date work was commenced at the Treforest Trading Estate; the amount of money expended upon it for all purposes; and the number of per sons in employment at present, other than for constructional purposes?

Mr. E. Brown

Work was begun on the Treforest Trading Estate on 21st December, 1936. £939,272 16s. 4d. has been advanced from the Special Areas Fund to the Trading Estates Company. On 28th February this year, 1,135 persons were employed in factories where production had begun.

Mr. Mainwaring

Can the Minister give us any approximate date by which time these trading estates will have attained a stage sufficient to deal with the distressed areas?

Mr. Brown

There is constant advancement from week to week and month to month.

Mr. Mainwaring

I gather that 1,000 men are already employed: by what time will the estates have attained proportions which will enable them to employ 50,000 unemployed men in South Wales?

Mr. Brown

That depends upon many circumstances, including, of course, many that are not inside these islands.
