HC Deb 23 March 1939 vol 345 c1441
31. Mr. James Griffiths

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the number of school buildings in Carmarthenshire that have been condemned as unsuitable by the Board; and what progress is being made in the provision of new schools to replace the condemned buildings?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education (Mr. Kenneth Lindsay)

Of the 21 schools originally on the Black List of schools with defective premises in the administrative county of Carmarthen, 13 schools have been removed from the list—two by closure, seven by improvement of existing premises and four by the erection of new buildings. With regard to the remaining eight schools, the authority have recently obtained sanction to a loan for the extension and reconstruction of one school; in two cases preliminary plans for improvements have been submitted; in two cases substantial improvements have been carried out, although some work remains to be done. It is hoped that the other three schools will be dealt with in the near future in connection with reorganisation schemes. In addition there is one school, not on the Black List, which has recently been condemned, and which will be closed on 31st July next.
