§ 11. Mr. McGovernasked the Minister of Labour the names of firms in Glasgow that have given instructions to managers of Employment Exchanges that they refuse to engage-Roman Catholics; and the names of firms giving similar instructions, and refusing to engage Protestants?
§ Mr. E. BrownSo far as I am aware no instructions of the nature referred to have been given by firms in Glasgow to the Employment Exchanges.
§ Mr. McGovernIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that in dealing with specific cases, I interviewed the manager of the Parkhead Employment Exchange and he stated that a number of firms in these categories had given definite instructions to the Parkhead Employment Exchange to that effect, and will the right hon. Gentleman use his good offices to cut out this Hitler persecution—for it savours more of that than the free British system?
§ Mr. BrownIf the hon. Member has any specific cases to which he desires to call my attention, I should be glad to have them. The hon. Member must realise that this does not go only one way.
§ Mr. McGovernI did not state that it goes only one way. Both sides, I understand, have been guilty of it. Will the right hon. Gentleman consult with the manager of the Parkhead Employment Exchange?
§ Mr. BrownI shall be glad to do so. The fundamental rule of the Exchanges is to supply the person most suitable for the job.
