HC Deb 02 March 1939 vol 344 cc1441-2
83. Mr. G. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Labour what number of men over 45 years of age are signing on at Royston and Cudworth Employment Exchanges; and whether he intends to do anything in this district?

Mr. E. Brown

The information desired is not available for any date since 28th February, 1938. At that date out of 367 unemployed men, aged 21 and over, on the registers of the Royston Employment Exchange 183 were aged 45 and over. At 16th January, 1939, there were 465 unemployed men, aged 21 and over, on the registers of that Exchange. Separate figures are not available in respect of Cudworth. As regards measures for assisting the older unemployed workers, I would refer the hon. Member to the statement made by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour in the course of the Debate on Wednesday of last week.

Mr. Griffiths

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in the last fortnight 85 men over 45 years of age have signed on at this Exchange, and will he do something to get these men some work?

Mr. Brown

I will try.

84. Mr. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Labour the number of applicants who are receiving the winter allowance both under statutory benefits and the Unemployment Assistance Board at the Royston and Cudworth Employment Exchanges?

Mr. Brown

I regret that information relating to Employment Exchange areas is not available, but I will forward to the hon. Member figures based on the administrative areas of the Board which, I hope, will serve his purpose.
