HC Deb 28 June 1939 vol 349 c405
39. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether consideration has been given by His Majesty's Government to the report of the Royal Commission on the Future Relations of Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, and Southern Rhodesia; and how soon he will be in a position to make a statement on the matter?

Mr. M. MacDonald

As I explained in the Debate on the Colonial Office Vote, His Majesty's Government, before giving detailed consideration to the recommendations of the Royal Commission, are awaiting reports from the Governors of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and an opportunity of discussion with the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia. Mr. Huggins is expected to arrive in London next week.

Mr. Creech Jones

In view of the visit of Dr. Huggins to discuss this matter, will the Government not commit themselves until there has been an opportunity for this House to express its views?

Mr. MacDonald

That is another matter. Perhaps the hon. Member will put that question down.
