§ 66. Mr. T. Smithasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the names of the local education authorities which make provision for school camps under Section 86 of the Education Act, 1921, and the number of places at each camp and the average number of children using them each year, distinguishing between the camps to which children are sent during term time and while there, continue their studies, and those which are used as holiday camps outside the school term?
§ The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education (Mr. Kenneth Lindsay)I am circulating in the Official Report a list of those authorities which are known to the board to have sent children to camps at some time during 1938. The list also indicates those authorities which are known to have sent children on school journeys. The list may not be complete as the board are not notified of all cases of camps and school journeys. The board have no definite information on the remaining parts of the question. I might add that I am taking steps to see that the board's records on this subject are made more complete.
§ Mr. SmithCan the hon. Gentleman say whether he is satisfied with the progress generally in this matter, by education authorities, and if not, what is the Department doing to encourage it?
§ Mr. LindsayWe do encourage it, and the figures in the report will show that there has been an increase, but I should like to take this opportunity of urging local authorities to make further use of this particular Section of the Act.
§ Mr. LindsayNo, Sir.
