HC Deb 26 June 1939 vol 349 cc31-2
71. Mr. Hammersley

asked the Minister of Transport whether he can now make a statement about the use of composite non-smoking and smoking compartments on the District and Metropolitan Railways?

The Minister of Transport (Captain Euan Wallace)

I am informed that, in some of the cars purchased under the present replacement programme for the District and Metropolitan lines of the board, there are glass screens, without doors, between smoking and non-smoking compartments. The design of these cars is provisional and the board propose to take steps as soon as practicable to convert them into wholly smoking or wholly non-smoking cars.

Mr. Thorne

Is there not an obligation upon the passengers themselves to see whether they are in a smoking compartment or a non-smoking compartment?

Captain Wallace

I do not think that has anything to do with the original question.

Mr. De la Bère

Is it not a far more vital point to see that the little men and the little women of this country should all have seats after a hard day's work?
