HC Deb 26 June 1939 vol 349 cc35-6
70. Mr. Doland (for Sir Cooper Rawson)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount of revenue throughout the country during the past financial year derived from motor-driving licences; and whether he will consider doubling the motor-driving licence fee and utilise the revenue towards a reduction of the horse-power tax?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Crookshank)

The answer to the first part of the question is. about £1,200,060. As regards the second part of the question, my right hon. Friend cannot see his way to accept my hon. Friend's suggestion. I may point out that the rates of licence duty on private cars and motor cycles could not be satisfactorily and equitably adjusted to effect so small a change in the total yield required.
