HC Deb 26 June 1939 vol 349 cc15-6
33. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will obtain from the milling combines the average cost of processing 100 tons of wheat, and the average tonnage of wheat offals derived therefrom?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I have consulted the National Association of British and Irish Millers, but they are unable to give the required information.

Mr. De la Bère

Then, if not, why not? Is there any great secrecy about the information which is asked for in this question; and would it not be in the national interest to have these figures?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I have no power to require the millers to furnish information under the heads indicated by the hon. Member.

Mr. De la Bère

Will my right hon. Friend seek powers to require this information from the millers?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

If the hon. Member will await the Poultry Industry Bill he will find that powers are contained in it.

Mr. Mathers

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how long we shall have to await the Bill?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I think the hon. Gentleman will be aware that the Bill has started its career in another place.

Mr. Mathers

We have not yet heard when it is likely to appear here.
