HC Deb 21 June 1939 vol 348 cc2210-1
27. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister the extent to which natives living in the Sudan have been recruited for service in the Italian army in Abyssinia; and what action has been taken in the matter?

Mr. Butler

My Noble Friend has no reason to believe that any natives living in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan have been recruited for the army in Italian East Africa.

Mr. Henderson

Is it not the fact that a number of Sudanese natives are being treated in hospitals in the Sudan as a result of injuries they have received in this service?

Mr. Butler

I understand that certain natives have been engaged on the construction of roads, but none, as far as we are aware, for military purposes.
