HC Deb 12 June 1939 vol 348 c891
44. Mrs. Adamson

asked the Post-master-General whether he can give any indication as to when the contract which has been placed with Messrs. Siemens Brothers and Company, Limited, for the laying of a telephone line to the island of Alderney is likely to be carried out; and whether, in view of the desire of the residents on the island for some telephonic communication to be established with the mainland at the earliest possible moment, he will see whether anything can be done to expedite this work?

Major Tryon

The hon. Member has been misinformed. No contract has been placed for the laying of a telephone line to Alderney. Plans have been drawn up to connect the island with Guernsey by means of a radio-telephone link. In view of the work involved, I am unable at this stage to say when the service is likely to be available.
