HC Deb 17 July 1939 vol 350 c3
1. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under secretary of State for India whether he has any further statement to make respecting Indian Federation; and whether His Majesty's Government intend to suspend further plans in this respect for the time being?

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead)

I have nothing to add to what I said in reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Kidderminster (Sir J. Wardlaw-Milne) on 8th June.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the hon. and gallant Gentleman give any sort of indication when he will be able to take a more definite step in regard to this matter?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The hon. Member will recollect that in the reply to which I have referred it was indicated that from the end of January a period of six months would be given. It will not be possible to deal with the White Paper before then and the hon. Member will realise some little time will need to elapse after that.
