HC Deb 05 July 1939 vol 349 cc1264-5
6. Captain Alan Graham

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the increasing importance of the Republic of Peru, he will consider aligning Great Britain with those other Great Powers who have already considered it advisable to raise their chief diplomatic representative at Lima to ambassadorial status?

Mr. Butler

While my Noble Friend appreciates the importance of strengthening our close and friendly relations with Peru, I would point out that this question cannot be considered in isolation. The establishment of an Embassy in Lima would at once bring up the question of the establishment of Embassies in a number of other countries. His Majesty's Government are not at present convinced that an extension of the number of Embassies is advisable.

Captain Graham

Will not my right hon. Friend reconsider his answer in view of the very particular reasons which realty outweigh the force of the general argument?

Mr. Butler

I appreciate the point of my hon. and gallant Friend's question, and my Noble Friend has given every aspect of the question his consideration.

Mr. Cocks

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is a good deal 0f German propaganda going on in Peru?
