HC Deb 05 July 1939 vol 349 c1264
4. Mr. Day

asked the Prime Minister whether, in relation to the German demand for colonies, His Majesty's Government have been in communication with the Governments of Belgium, France and Japan regarding the German claims for the return of the former German colonies, at present being administered under Mandate by those Governments; and what is the attitude of the respective Governments on this matter?

Mr. Butler

There has been no recent exchange of views with any foreign Governments on this question. The attitude of the French Government has been made clear by the French Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs on several occasions, more particularly in their statements on 26th January and 7th February last. The attitude of the Belgian Government was stated by the then Prime Minister on 3rd November last. So far as my Noble Friend is aware the Japanese Government have not recently expressed any views on this question.

Mr. Day

Can we be informed what is the square mileage of these colonies?
