HC Deb 31 January 1939 vol 343 cc35-6
60. Mr. David Adams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware that ratings on Royal Fleet Auxiliary steamers do not receive adequate and regularised rest periods when in port; that they may be required to work for a continuous period of 24 hours, sometimes followed by 24 hours off duty; and whether he will take steps to secure the observance of proper rest periods and thus obviate the dangers of overwork?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty (Mr. Shakespeare)

Normally ratings on Royal Fleet Auxiliaries are given proper periods of rest in accordance with Merchant Navy routine, but in exceptional circumstances, such as those that existed for a short period last autumn, they may be employed on fuelling several ships in quick succession. Requirements of this nature are, as I have said, exceptional, and the crews are not asked to undertake them unless the necessity of the Service demands it.

Mr. Adams

May I take it that the Admiralty use their best endeavours to avoid this overwork as far as is practicable?

Mr. Shakespeare

Certainly.

Mr. Macquisten

Will they take steps to regulate the weather in the interests of seafaring men?
