asked the Secretary for Mines the number of wage-earners who were employed below ground in the coalmines in Great Britain to the last convenient date in 1937; and the number for the comparable date in 1930?

The number of wage-earners employed below ground in the coal mines of Great Britain at 11th December, 1937, was 624,445. The number so employed at 13th December, 1930, was 719,360.
