HC Deb 27 February 1939 vol 344 cc907-8
72. Mr. Leonard

asked the First Com missioner of Works whether he is aware of the unsatisfactory lighting of the Committee Rooms of the House; and if he has included in his scheme of reconditioning an improvement of such lighting?

Sir P. Sassoon

I am aware that the lighting conditions in certain of the Committee Rooms are not in all respects satisfactory. I hope that it may be possible to effect some improvements during the coming financial year, subject to the restrictions arising from the need for economy in public expenditure and the pressure of the load at present being carried by the technical staff of my Department in connection with defence works.

Mr. Leonard

Does not the importance of the work done in the Committee rooms warrant immediate attention to this matter?

Sir P. Sassoon

I am attending to it.

Sir T. Moore

Is my right hon. Friend aware that he is doing very well so far?

Mr. Thorne

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware of the badness of the lighting in other rooms in this building besides the Committee rooms; and is he aware that there is nothing worse than bad lighting for the eyesight of the people who have to work there?
