HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 c1902
68. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Home Secretary by what statutory authority did the Metropolitan police, on 3rd February, disperse a procession of men, employed on Waterloo Bridge, marching to the County Hall in order that their spokesmen might interview members of the Council; and whether he will take steps to see that the police do not deprive London citizens of their right to use the highway on all lawful occasions?

Sir S. Hoare

The hon. Member appears to have been misinformed of the facts. The procession in question was not dispersed by the police. When it was ascertained by the police that the procession intended to march along the Strand and Whitehall to the County Hall the leader was reminded that in view of the Sessional Order of the House the choice of route could not be permitted and an alternative route via York Road was suggested. This advice was accepted and no incident occurred, the procession being orderly throughout and finally dispersing of its own accord.
