HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 c1886
33. Mr. Messer

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he is aware of the hardship which will be caused by maintenance grants now allowable to secondary school children at the age of 14 not being allowable until the age of 15 due to the raising of the school-leaving age; and if the Board propose taking any steps to deal with it?

Mr. Lindsay

Local education authorities who award maintenance grants to secondary school pupils on reaching the age of 14 are not required by the Board to alter their existing practice consequent on the raising of the school-leaving age. Where, however, such authorities desire to make a change, the Board will be fully prepared to consider proposals for obviating any hardship that may be involved.
