HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 cc1876-7
21. Mr. Gordon Macdonald

asked the Minister of Labour the reason for the delay in the erection of a more adequate building as an Employment Exchange at Upholland, near Wigan; and when he expects building operations to commence?

Mr. E. Brown

The selection of a site has been difficult and negotiations are still proceeding. I am anxious to rehouse this office, but as was explained by my right hon. Friend, the First Commissioner of Works, in answer to the hon. Member for Consett (Mr. David Adams) on Friday last, priority must be given by his Department to work on National Defence, and I am afraid I cannot give a definite date for building.
