HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 c1884
26. Mr. Pilkington

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons in insurable employment in September, 1931, and September, 1938?

Mr. E. Brown

The estimated numbers of insured persons, aged 16–64, in employment in Great Britain at 21st September, 1931, and 12th September, 1938, were 9,338,000 and 11,429,000 respectively. The figure for September, 1938, has been compiled under the revised procedure for counting the unemployed introduced in September, 1937, which at that time had the effect of raising the estimated number of insured persons in employment by about 44,000. For purpose of comparison it excludes persons insured under the agricultural scheme, and also persons in the domestic employments which were brought into insurance in April, 1938.

Mr. Pilkington

Has my right hon. Friend received any appreciation at all of those facts from the side opposite?

Mr. Lawson

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us the figures from 1931 to date for Lancashire?

Mr. Brown

If the question is put down, of course I can.
