HC Deb 12 December 1939 vol 355 cc1024-5
79. Mr. Robert Gibson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will take steps with the appropriate Government Departments to secure that more canning factories be set up in the Clyde area to make available, for service men and the general public, the abundant supplies of herring in these waters?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Mr. Lennox-Boyd)

have been asked to reply. From such in formation as I have been able to obtain. I see no reason to think that the capacity of the existing canning factories is insufficient to cope with any demands that are likely to be made upon them. The Ministry of Food is, however, pursuing the matter further, in consultation with the other Departments concerned.

Mr. Gibson

If I give the hon. Gentleman information in regard to a canning factory in that area I indicated in my question, which is standing idle, will he give die matter his attention?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I shall be very glad to have that information.
