HC Deb 03 August 1939 vol 350 c2589
9. Mr. Denville

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of a serious threat to an old-established important local industry on the North-East Coast, whereby a sound economical and durable product giving work to thousands of people in the brick industry is menaced by organised competition of a commodity from another area; and what steps he is taking to prevent an increase of unemployment in this already distressed area?

Mr. E. Brown

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave in reply to a similar question by the hon. Member for East Middlesbrough (Mr. A. Edwards) on 9th March.

Mr. Denville

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the brickyards on the coast of Durham are having to close down through the incursion of these large combines from the south?
