HC Deb 04 April 1939 vol 345 cc2595-6
17. Mr. Hamilton Kerr

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps will be taken to ensure that proper regard is had for the welfare of British cotton textile exports to America; and for the preservation of the concessions obtained in the Anglo-American Trade Agreement in connection with the plan now proposed, to impose a quota on imports into America of foreign textiles?

Mr. Stanley

Detailed information as to the reported proposal of the United States Government to impose a quota on the importation of cotton textiles is not yet available. His Majesty's Government have no information suggesting that it would involve Imposing quotas on United Kingdom textiles specified in the Trade Agreement between the United Kingdom and the United States signed on 17th November last.

Mr. Kerr

Can the right hon Gentleman say what countries will be affected?

Mr. Stanley

I have no detailed information.
