HC Deb 06 October 1938 vol 339 c459
1. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is in a position to give particulars of what further progress has been made by the commissioners during the previous 12 months in promoting the industrial development and social improvement of the special and/or distressed areas?

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Brown)

Reports from the Commissioners for the Special Areas for the year ending 30th September are in course of preparation and will be published as soon as practicable after they are received.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister give us any information of what further plans are being considered?

Mr. Brown

Perhaps the hon. Gentleman will be willing to await the report which will give full information.

Mr. Day

The report deals with the last 12 months, but I am asking about the future.

Mr. Brown

I understand what the hon. Member is asking.

Mr. Batey

Will the report deal with the question of the Special Areas as a whole, and may I point out that the position is no better in Durham and South Wales?

Mr. Brown

It will deal with the general question.
