HC Deb 29 November 1938 vol 342 c251
67. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that uncertainty exists concerning the eligibility for National Health Insurance of part-time church caretakers; and whether, in view of the desire of church officers and caretakers that the latter shall be eligible, he will expedite a favourable decision on the matter?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health (Mr. Bernays)

The question whether a part-time church caretaker is insurable under the National Health Insurance Act depends on the facts of the particular case, and cannot be decided in a general sense. In these circumstances my right hon. Friend realises that those responsible for the employment of such persons may occasionally feel some uncertainty in the matter; and for this reason an official explanatory leaflet (a copy of which I am sending to the hon. Member) has been prepared regarding the insurance of persons employed in connection with places of worship. My right hon. Friend is looking into a particular case to which the hon. Member has drawn his attention since giving notice of this question and will let him know the result as soon as possible.
