HC Deb 29 November 1938 vol 342 cc224-5
20. Mr. Lunn

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any information as to whether or not the Government of Eire have decided to take over the control of industrial assurance; and, if so, on what conditions?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

I understand that a Bill relating to industrial assurance is now before the Parliament of Eire. I am sending a copy of the Bill in its latest form to the hon. Member.

Mr. Rhys Davies

In view of the fact that the Government of Eire are proposing to control the industrial assurance in that country, will the right hon. Gentleman give a hint to his friends in the Cabinet to do likewise in this country?

Mr. MacDonald

I think that if the hon. Gentleman examines the legislation he will see that the Government are not intending to do quite what he supposes.

Mr. Shinwell

Is it true to say that the legislation passed by the Government of Eire has caused considerable complications to industrial assurance societies in this country?

Mr. MacDonald

The legislation referred to in this question has not yet passed the Parliament of Eire. It is now being debated in the Senate—in the Upper Chamber.
