HC Deb 28 November 1938 vol 342 cc31-2
57. Mr. Lewis

asked the Postmaster-General why a complete set of postage stamps bearing the portrait of the present Sovereign has not yet been issued; and how soon the set is likely to be completed?

The Postmaster-General (Major Tryon)

Preparations for the issue of postage stamps of new design unavoidably occupy much time; for example, in order to secure the best possible designs we have consulted the Royal Fine Art Commission and other authorities. Stamps of the new reign of the most commonly used values, ½d. to 3d., have been available for a considerable period, the 4d. and 5d. values were placed on sale on 21st November, and the other values will follow as rapidly as circumstances permit. The designs for the three highest value stamps have been decided upon this month, thus completing the designs for the whole range of the stamps of the present reign.
