HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 c1050
54. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether he will instruct the Committee of Imperial Defence to prepare an appreciation of the effect upon the security of British communications through the Western Atlantic and the Mediterranean of a victory in Spain for General Franco to which Italian and German intervention there had contributed?

The Prime Minister

The question of the security of British communications through the Western Atlantic and in the Mediterranean has already been considered in all its bearings and is kept under review by the Committee of Imperial Defence.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

While appreciating that these matters are kept under general review by the Committee of Imperial Defence, may I ask whether it would not be reassuring to the country to know that the matter is engaging the special attention of the Committee of Imperial Defence and to have an appreciation of the kind mentioned?

The Prime Minister

I said that it is kept under review in all its bearings, and I am sure that that will be very reassuring to the country.
