HC Deb 15 November 1938 vol 341 c692
71. Mr. Leslie

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the dangerous position of the London area as revealed in the recent crisis, steps will be taken to advise industrial concerns as to the advantages of factory sites in distressed areas, so as to prevent further congestion in the vicinity of the Metropolis?

Mr. E. Brown

It is the policy of the Government to encourage the establishment of new factories in the Special Areas and other areas of heavy unemployment. The facilities offered and the advantages which particular areas possess are widely advertised by Development Councils and by the Commissioners for the Special Areas, and I have no doubt that the consideration to which the hon. Member refers will not be overlooked by them, or by employers intending to open new establishments.

Mr. Leslie

Will special consideration be given to these derelict villages, where excellent sites are available, where housing accommodation already exists, and where the labour is there?

Mr. Brown

Attention is constantly given to those considerations, and with considerable effect, as the hon. Member knows.

Mr. Leslie

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that if consideration has been given, there have been no factories established in these derelict villages yet?

Mr. Brown

As the hon. Member knows, there is not an unlimited number of new factories.
