HC Deb 14 November 1938 vol 341 cc465-6
1. Sir Nairne Stewart Sandeman

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India, what steps the Government of India are taking in view of the attempt by the working committee of Congress to set up an organisation parallel to that of the central Government, and in opposition to it?

The Civil Lord of the Admiralty (Colonel Llewellin)

I have been asked to reply. My Noble Friend is not aware of any action taken by Congress in the direction suggested which calls for special measures by the Government of India.

Sir N. Stewart Sandeman

If I send my hon. Friend notes on the subject which I have received from India will he take up the question?

Colonel Llewellin

I shall certainly look into it. I have no doubt my Noble Friend will give the matter consideration.

Sir N. Stewart Sandeman

Does my hon. and gallant Friend not think it would be a very good opportunity for looking into the whole matter?

Mr. Annesley Somerville

Would not such a movement be an obstacle in the way of Federation?
