§ 19. Mr. Pearsonasked the Minister of Labour whether consideration has been or will be given to the desirability of the Ministry of Labour training centre at Treforest being established as a general industrial training centre equal in scope to the centre at Bristol?
§ Mr. E. BrownI will consider this suggestion, although I am not sure that it would be advantageous. The question of the strength and type of the various training centres covered by the Ministry of Labour training schemes is kept continuously under review, and the House will realise that the success of the centres must mainly depend upon the proportion of successful placings at the end of the period of training.
§ Mr. SimmondsWill the right hon. Gentleman consult with these trading estate authorities and see whether these changes would not induce more industrialists to come?
§ Mr. BrownI have done that. Perhaps my hon. Friend did not follow the last 346 part of my answer. A Government training centre of this type is for the training of men as improvers semi-skilled in the engineering occupations. If there are not enough potential vacancies in the district where the training centre is, the work of the centre must be adversely affected. That is the point at issue. If the time arrives when the trading estate authorities and the Ministry of Labour agree that we can properly do that, I have said already that I will consider the suggestion.
