HC Deb 03 November 1938 vol 340 cc349-50
12. Mr. R. Robinson

asked the Minister of Labour what action has been taken by his Departmental Committee in connection with the spread-over of holidays?

Mr. E. Brown

The object of the Inter-Departmental Committee is to serve as a link between the various Departments which are concerned with this matter. The special branch set up in my Department has arranged consultations with organisations of employers and workers, and is collecting information as to the extent of holidays given, the arrangements for settling their dates, the facilities for saving for holidays, the arrangements for holiday accommodation, and other matters. I hope to issue before long a booklet on holiday agreements which I hope will be of service to organisations contemplating the making of such agreements.

Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the wholesale organisation of a geographical spread-over of holidays in order to include the Highlands and Islands, and their development as a tourist area?

Mr. Brown

That seems a very long and elegant phrase, and I should like to consider its implications.
