HC Deb 02 November 1938 vol 340 cc198-9
1. Mr. W. Roberts (for Mr. Mander)

asked the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make with reference to the present situation in the Memel territory?

Mr. Butler

The autonomous regime in the Memelland continues to work normally; but the proposal of the Lithuanian Government to abolish the state of modified martial law at present in force in the whole of Lithuania, including the Memel province, and to substitute for it a special State Security Law, has given rise to protests by the majority parties in the Memel Diet, who maintain that special security regulations of any sort are contrary to the Memel Statute.
