HC Deb 02 November 1938 vol 340 cc186-7
10. Sir J. Mellor

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make a further statement with regard to the service of the loans issued by the Brazilian Government in the United Kingdom?

Mr. Butler

His Majesty's Ambassador at Rio has, on several occasions during recent months, drawn the attention of the competent Brazilian authorities to this matter, without, however, eliciting any concrete suggestions on the subject of the resumption of payments in respect of the Brazilian foreign debt. As stated in the reply given to the hon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall) on 20th June last, His Majesty's Government will continue to give their fullest support to the Council of Foreign Bondholders in their efforts to secure acceptable proposals from the Brazilian Government.

Mr. Robert Gibson

Has the Under-Secretary taken into consideration the destruction of coffee by the Rio Government, and has he considered the acceptance of part of that coffee in part liquidation of the loans in question?

Mr. Butler

I think the Council of British Bondholders have considered all relevant matters.
